Software Internship: TOM Toolkit

Title: Advancing Astronomy with the TOM Toolkit

Project Description: The TOM Toolkit is an open-source software project funded by the National Science Foundation and developed at Las Cumbres Observatory.

A TOM (Target-Observation Manager) is software used by astronomers to make, track, and analyze observations for a wide range of astronomical programs. The TOM Toolkit provides the tools that an astronomer needs to build their own TOM which not only connects with their local observatory, but also interfaces with some of humanity's biggest science experiments, such as LIGO (a network of gravitational wave detectors) and the LSST (Legacy Survey of Space and Time). The TOM Toolkit is based upon Django, a web development framework written in Python. Work is currently underway to improve the TOM Toolkit in many different project areas, including front-end UI/UX design, backend development, data science, and data analysis.

We are looking for someone interested in working closely with both astronomers and software engineers to improve the TOM Toolkit, developing new functionality and features that will allow astronomers to easily and reliably study the heavens.

What you will encounter while working on this project:

  • Supportive Software Engineers
  • Engaging Astronomers
  • Adorable Office Dogs
  • Python (Django)
  • Javascript (if you are interested)
  • A fun new coding challenge each day
