How do we know if an asteroid is going to hit the Earth?

I will describe recent advances in technologies for detecting Earth impacting asteroids.  I will also discuss how we turn those observations into actionable data which will allow us to decide which of these asteroids we need to pay attention to, and which of those will eventually need to be deflected from Earth.
