LCOGT FITS Data Products: Format and Descriptions

The following table contains brief descriptions of the FITS header keywords for each raw or processed frame in the LCOGT Archive. FITS header keywords with an 'L1'prefix are from Level 1 processing (quicklook or final reduction) and will not be present in raw data.

The columns in the following table are:

  • Keyword: The FITS header keyword.
  • Format: The ASCII-equivalent format of the field in the Catalog, expressed in "C"-readable notation.
  • Units: The units of the parameter. A blank in this column means the parameter is dimensionless or non-numeric.
  • Description: A brief description of the parameter and its values.
  • Documentation: When needed, a longer description of the parameter and its values.

Descriptions of the extracted source catalog headers are on a separate page.

rotmode 55s   Rotator mode The selected image rotator mode. Must be set to one of {SKY, MOUNT, VFLOAT, VERTICAL, FLOAT, N/A}. The modes are:
  • SKY: The parameter gives position angle on the sky (measured anticlockwise from north which is 0 degrees). If rotator tracking is enabled (as it is at start-up) the rotator will follow this PA as the telescope moves.
  • MOUNT: The parameter gives mount position angle in degrees. ROTATOR MOUNT stops the turntable at the requested position angle.
  • FLOAT: Floating mode, so that on source change the sky PA is set to that computed from the current mount PA so ensuring minimum rotator slewing. This mode is used if sky PA is unimportant but rotator tracking is required.
  • VERTICAL: Move the rotator to so that the slit is vertical and stops it. It is intended to minimise loss of light due to differential refraction during spectroscopic observing. (XXX Following true?) Note that autoguiding is not possible, since off-axis images move in the focal plane.
  • VFLOAT: Puts the rotator into vertical floating mode, so that on source change the sky PA is set to that computed which gives a vertical slit the rotator then track that sky PA. This mode is used if sky PA tracking is required but minimises effects from atmospheric dispersion. This is generally more useful than the VERTICAL option, since autoguiding is possible.
  • N/A: Must be set to 'N/A' for telescopes without a selected image rotator.
