Galaxies Galore

Mar 28, 2008

We are pleased to announce that we have 3 new exciting galaxies projects for FT users to enjoy! From energetic jets to crashing galaxies, these projects aim to cover a variety of galaxy topics.

In the first project, based on the Hubble Tuning Fork Diagram, you can use data taken with the Faulkes Telescopes to produce colour images of galaxies of different types, and create your very own FT tuning fork diagram. Click here to go to the page.

The second project, 'Measuring M87', moves into active galaxies, at the centre of which black holes are pulling nearby matter onto them, causing large amounts of energy to be ejected. Jets of hot, ionized gas shoot out of these galaxies, and using data taken with the Faulkes Telescopes, you can produce a colour image of the giant elliptical galaxy, M87 and its jet, and measure how far it extends with the software package SalsaJ.

The third new project consists of crashing galaxies together using the Java applet, 'Galaxy Crash'. You can make your own elliptical galaxies, or just pull streams of stars out of nearby galaxies. Then, try and match your simulations with observations of interactions we see today and see how they'll end up in billions of years time!
