Goleta Students Use Faulkes Telescope and Win Gold Medals at County Science Fair

Apr 17, 2010

Tonight at the Santa Barbara County Science fair, Daniel Godinez, Caylin Canales and Rishika Singh all won gold medals for their science fair projects and will be going to the state science fair next month! Daniel and Caylin with their teacher Kim Miller from Goleta Valley Junior High and Rishika, a Dos Pueblos High School student, observed the Monoceros R2 cluster with Faulkes Telescope South earlier this year. Daniel and Caylin's project compared an H-R diagram they made from their observations to H-R diagrams of other well studied clusters and were able to determine that Monoceros R2 is a young open cluster. Rishika's project looked for correlations between the age of open clusters, their size, and their location in the galaxy in the context of Monoceros R2. Congratulations to all and best of luck at the state science fair!
