About
The Catamount Astronomy Club (CatAstro, CAC) is committed to creating a welcoming community at Western Carolina University for anyone interested in furthering their knowledge about the cosmos and sharing the wonders of astronomy with all. Our purpose is to:
- Share the beauty of the night sky with all students and the Cullowhee/Sylva community at large.
- Educate members and the community on astronomy through various methods and mediums.
- Collaborate with other clubs to effectively raise awareness of and share other STEM and related topics.
- Foster an enthusiasm for the night sky that will stick for life.
Promote awareness of light pollution and its effect on the night sky, the environment, and people. - So many people love stargazing and the night sky. We aim to connect interested stargazers with experts and equipment so that they can truly begin to enjoy the cosmos.
- Our group has used LCO images to supplement presentations indoors and present images through laptops/tablets at public astronomy events.
We also do outreach to local middle school students and supported in-class activities where students use the Kiosk to request images in the LCO network. We have also had campaigns with middle school kids to monitor variable stars and exoplanet transits.
