5034 views

The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293, C63) is a planetary nebula discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding. It is one of the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae at 650 light-years away. It was formed by an intermediate to low-mass star, which sheds its outer layers near the end of its lifespan to become a white dwarf star.
