Palomar Transient Factory: Elusive Explosions in the Local Universe

January 26, 2012

The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) scorecard now stands at discovery and classification of 1400+ transients and 40+ papers. I will present a  tiny glimpse into some of our scientific results with a focus on the local universe. The PTF sensitivity to transients fainter, faster and rarer than supernovae has helped bridge the wide six-magnitude luminosity gap between novae and supernovae. I will present discoveries and the unique physics of these elusive explosions. There is now evidence of multiple, distinct populations of rare transients in this "gap".
