Who are our neighbors? Since 1994, the Research Consortium On Nearby Stars (RECONS, www.recons.org) has been spying on thousands of the nearest stars, both old friends and new members of the neighborhood. In this presentation, you'll meet your neighbors, with specific emphasis on the latest comprehensive census of stars, brown dwarfs, and planets closer than 10 parsecs (about 33 light years). Surprising results include the stunning number of small, red dwarf neighbors lurking near the Sun ... but where are the brown dwarfs? Several neighbors have "kids" in that they are orbited by planets, and the hunt is on using new techniques for additional worlds not too far away. There are also a few nutty neighbors that defy explanation. Isn't that always the case?
