LCO Wins Major NSF Grant for the Expansion of Astronomical Network
The Astronomy & Astrophysics Awareness project in Nigeria, seeks to make STEM-based studies more intuitive, by incorporating computer-based simulation to facilitate learning and retention of Astronomy and Astrophysics. We hope to use the LCO global network of telescopes and scheduling software as an integral part of the thorough science engagement program that we will be anchoring here in Nigeria. It will enable us have data (images) that we cannot acquire due to our lack of infrastructure (Telescopes) of the magnitude and capacity that LCO has. Such data will present the opportunity to test different image processing algorithms. We are particularly interested in the use of Artificial Neural Network algorithm (deep learning). We believe this will go a long way to support our researchers acquire broader knowledge with invaluable results and share them through Open Access Publications. A typical session during the project, will involve a general introduction of the subject of Astronomy and Astrophysics, followed by acquainting our audience with what a telescope is and identifying its various parts. Thanks to wealth of knowledge and experience from AWB projects, and available telescopes in our custody, we will conduct practical classes where participants will take turns to get a first-hand feel of a real telescope and use it outdoors.
